It should not be. If it is an effective newsletter, it will
serve the needs of readers (employees) as much as it serves the
needs of the publisher (management).
Let me explain how to ensure it serves employees as well as
management, by reviewing four key points I make in A Manager's
Guide to Newsletters: Communicating for Results.
Objectives and reader responses: First, state your objectives in
terms of reader responses. This forces you to focus on your
readers, and what they're likely or not ... Read the rest of this entry »

If you are selling anything, you should have a website. If you
are selling ebooks, you should consider it mandatory. How many
people do you know who read ebooks but don't access the
Internet? None come to my mind.
The best thing about having a website is that you can quite
probably do it free. Later, once you know what you're doing, you
can choose to buy a domain name and pay a hosting service if you
want.
You can pay someone to design a gorgeous site for you, loaded
with graphics, complete ... Read the rest of this entry »

The recent trend towards HTML email really disturbs me. I, for
one, do not like HTML email. If I want to see the glitz and
color, I will go to your website, but send me plain text in your
email. Do I receive HTML emails? Sure. But the delete key is
right there and I use it. And so do a lot of other people. HTML
belongs in web pages.
One major concern is bandwidth. HTML email files are much larger
than plain text. I resent the fact that it takes longer to
download the HTML email from my server. ... Read the rest of this entry »

Free is good. Free is great because it doesn't cost anything.
That's probably why so many marketers have a tendency to
gravitate towards free methods of promoting their site. It makes
perfect sense.
However, what many Internet marketers forget is that nothing is
free -- absolutely nothing. It's a simple, fundamental concept
of economics: "There are no free lunches." If you spend time
implementing a free marketing method, you've still incurred a
cost: your time.
And many people forget that time ... Read the rest of this entry »

If you've been publishing for a while, your newsletter content
mix may be static. Maybe each issue includes the same tired
content: one press release, one 'Top Ten Tips' article, and one
'News From Headquarters' feature. Or maybe your newsletter is
still relatively new, but in the hectic days of launching it you
concentrated on building your subscriber list and graphic
design, not content. If so, now is the time to take a hard look
at your newsletter content.
Maybe your newsletter content has ... Read the rest of this entry »

Newsletters can be wonderful tools for communicating with your

infused with more credibility than traditional brochures. If
your newsletter is little more than blatant self-promotion,
however, it's likely to hit the wastebasket before it hits your
target's desk.

wonderful information through the convenience of your email.
It's still like this today - for the publishers that are getting
it right. I believe newsletter publishers somewhere along the
way forget WHY readers subscribe. On their websites we are
promised all this wonderful information and instead we receive a
sales pitch, email after email.
Bad newsletters far out ... Read the rest of this entry »
